Stomach Churn Lab
On November eighth and ninth my science class split up into groups and did an experiment on how acidic conditions affect protein digestion. For this lab we needed to label four test tubes each with a different letter A,B,C or D and in each test tube we had to fill each test tube with three cubes of egg whites about one centimeter on each side. In test tube letter A my group and I filled the test tube with ten mL of the enzyme pepsin by measuring it into a clean graduate cylinder and poor it on top of the egg whites. once we finished with that we must observe to see if there was any immediate reaction and if the wasn't any immediate reaction we had to put our observation under day 1 in our data table. Once we recorded our data my group and i moved on to test tube letter B. In test tube letter B my group and I had to clean the graduate cylinder and add five mL of pepsin and poor it into the test tube B. Then we had to clean the cylinder and we had to add five mL of water and poor it into test tube B then recorded our data like test tube A. Then when we recorded the data we moved on to test tube C which was very dangerous because we are using a dangerous chemical called hydrochloric acid which can burn your skin. Before the school day started my science teacher mixed the hydrochloric acid with water so it would be less dangerous but even though its diluted with water it can still burn your skin right through your clothes. Once we cleaned the cylinder my science teacher poured ten mL of hydrochloric acid and poured it in to test tube C then we recorded what happened in our data and in surprise on my group and i nothing happened right away. Then finally my table was down to test tube D so we cleaned the cylinder again and we added five mL of pepsin and poured it into test tube D and rinsed the cylinder for the last time and my science teacher added five mL of hydrochloric acid and poured it into test tube D. Then again for the last time I recorded my data for the last time. Then my table and I got four strips of blue litmus paper which turns pink when it comes in contact with acid. When we got the strips we took four different straws and dipped each straw into a different test tube and put a drop if liquid on each test tube. In a couple seconds we waited for A and B's litmus paper to change but it never did then we looked at C and D's litmus paper and it turned pink and A and D are he ones that had the acid in it. When we went to school the next day we looked at my groups test tubes and we looked at the cubes of egg whites and we observed each test tube and noted any changes into day two of our data chart. In the end test tube A had no changes to it. Also test tube B the only thing was that it was foggy inside the test tube but nothing to the egg whites. This is when the egg starts to change test tube C we noticed that it starts to look like scrambled eggs but it didn't start to break down. Then comes test tube D my group noticed that the egg started to break down. At of all the test tubes, D was the one that actually broke down the egg whites and that is the one that is most like the inside of our body.
